Picking the right white paint might seem like the easiest decision you’ll make for your home but any designer knows it's often the hardest. White is never just "white." It is the most complex of neutrals, changing its tone based on the natural light, surrounding colors, and even the time of day.
The secret to choosing the correct white is identifying its hidden undertone. Is it cool (blue, gray, or violet), or warm (yellow, red, or brown)? Cool Whites contain gray or blue. They are crisp, clean, and often feel modern. Warm Whites contain yellow, cream, or beige. They feel soft, inviting, and traditional.

Pure Whites
These whites carry virtually no discernible undertone, offering the clearest reflection of light and the highest degree of contrast. They are the go-to for trim and ceilings.
1. Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65)

If you are looking for the absolute purest, brightest white with the least amount of discernible undertone, this is it. It reads as a true white in almost every light condition, making it the ideal choice for trim and ceilings. It’s clean without being cold.
2. Farrow & Ball All White (No. 2005)

This white is famous for containing no pigment other than white, meaning it has zero added colorant. If you need a white that won't betray any unexpected cool or warm undertones, All White is your answer. It reflects the surrounding colors beautifully, making it a pure, sophisticated foundation that always reads true.
3. Sherwin-Williams Pure White (SW 7005)

This is a brilliant, versatile white that is slightly softer than Chantilly Lace. It has a very faint yellow/gray undertone, but it mostly reads as a true white. It doesn't look stark on its own, and it avoids the overly institutional feel some bright whites carry.
Cool Whites
These colors provide a crisp, slightly cool base, lending a modern feel that is perfect for sleek cabinetry and modern interiors.
4. Benjamin Moore Decorator's White (OC-149)

A famous, classic cool white that lives up to its name.It has a noticeable touch of gray/violet undertone, making it a favorite for modern spaces. It looks fantastic when used as trim against deep, moody wall colors.
5. Benjamin Moore Super White (OC-152)

This white is extremely reflective and carries a slight, cool edge. Its faint cool undertone makes it excellent for trim and doors as it helps maintain a high-contrast, polished look without any yellow tones.
6. Sherwin-Williams Extra White (SW 7006)

One of Sherwin-Williams' cleanest, coolest, and most popular whites. Extra White has a noticeable blue/gray undertone that keeps it feeling fresh and clean. It’s perfect for walls and ceilings where you want maximum brightness and a crisp feeling.

Creamy Whites
These options offer enduring comfort and are perfect for creating that timeless feeling without veering into yellow.
7. Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117)

Simply White is a designer favorite for its inviting, sun-kissed quality. It has a slight yellow pigment, but it never reads as true yellow. It’s perfect for adding a bit of visual sunshine to rooms that need warming up.
8. Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17)

Arguably one of the most popular whites of all time, White Dove is a perfect balance of soft and clean. It carries a tiny hint of gray/beige, giving it depth and ensuring it never feels harsh or cold. It's fantastic for trim in transitional homes, as it complements both warm and cool wall colors.
9. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008)

Alabaster is the ideal gentle off-white with soft, natural warmth. It’s a wonderful alternative to stark white when pairing with natural wood tones or creamy upholstery, providing a gentle contrast that feels instantly comfortable.
When you're making a paint selection, remember that the perfect white color is a long-term investment in the mood and atmosphere of your home. A little bit of white paint can go a long way towards brightening your space.
