How to Choose the Perfect Nightstand

More than just a decorative accent, a nightstand is one of the hardest-working pieces in the bedroom. It provides storage, anchors the bed, and creates visual balance while keeping everyday essentials within arm's reach. With countless options available in every size, shape, and finish imaginable, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, the decision can be simplified into a handful of key considerations.

Height
A good rule of thumb is to keep the top of the nightstand within about 5 inches of the top of the mattress. Most designers aim for a nightstand that sits level with the mattress or slightly higher, making it comfortable to reach for any essential without stretching.
That said, lower-profile nightstands can be just as successful, particularly in more minimalist interiors. If that's the look you're after, try to keep the surface no more than about 3 inches below the mattress so it still feels easy to use.

Width
Generally speaking, the wider the bed, the wider the nightstand should be. A king-size bed can comfortably support larger nightstands, while full or queen beds often benefit from slimmer proportions. There is plenty of flexibility here; the goal is simply to ensure the nightstand feels proportional to the bed rather than too bulky or too small.
Also consider the size of the room. In a compact bedroom, a narrower nightstand can preserve valuable circulation space without sacrificing functionality.

Proportion
While size matters, visual weight is equally important. A substantial upholstered bed with a tall headboard calls for a nightstand with enough presence to balance it, whereas a light metal or platform bed pairs well with a more delicate piece. The two should feel like they belong together, even if they aren't a matching set.

Storage
Before choosing a style, consider how you'll actually use your nightstand. If you prefer a clutter-free bedroom, drawers provide a convenient place to tuck away chargers, medications, and other everyday necessities. Open shelving creates a lighter, airier appearance while offering space to display decorative objects or keep frequently used items within easy reach.
For those who need the best of both worlds, a combination of a drawer and open shelving offers both concealed storage and display space.

Finish
A nightstand doesn't have to perfectly match every other piece of furniture in the room, but it should complement the overall design. You want a piece that balances out the bed and other furniture and provides some contrast. For example, an upholstered bed would pair nicely with a wooden nightstand. Consider repeating finishes already present throughout the space, such as a certain color or metal accent, to create a cohesive look. Mixing materials can also add character and depth. A wood nightstand paired with brass hardware, a marble top, or woven details can introduce visual interest without overwhelming the room.

Don't Forget the Details
The accessories you place on your nightstand are just as important as the furniture itself. Leave enough surface area for the essentials, a lamp, a book, your phone, or a glass of water, without overcrowding it. A small tray can help corral everyday items while keeping the space feeling organized and intentional.
Design standards are in place as guidance, not as strict rules. Great design isn't about following rules to the letter; it's about creating spaces that feel balanced, functional, and personal. In more eclectic interiors, breaking conventional design "rules" often results in the most memorable spaces. If a particular nightstand feels right for your room and suits the way you live, trust your instincts. Sometimes the best design decisions are the ones that prioritize personality over perfection.
